Destiny and The Dream Giver

in Adjusting to India

There’s only one more day until I fly out to India. My mind’s in overdrive, coming up with as many safe memories of the past as possible to hold me here. It’s torturing me, almost paralyzing me with anxiety so I don’t step out of my comfort zone. It’s trying to play on my attachment to all the material possessions that I don’t really need, and that I know I won’t miss.

But then in amongst all this mental turmoil came a saving grace from an unexpected source — a work colleague, and funnily enough a fellow accountant. On my last day at work he gave me a book called The Dream Giver, by Dr. Bruce Wilkinson. It’s a book about living your dream instead of just living your life. I can only view this as a sign from the universe that it’s supporting me in the direction I’m going in, and I should gather my courage and get on with it. The book itself is very inspiring and addresses all my fears about leaving the familiar, and choosing my dream over comfort. I’ve referred to it so many times already while packing up my belongings. It’s so reassuring to know what I’m feeling is completely normal.

I’ve never been good at dealing with change, but giving into my fear of uncertainty is just not an option. Comfort’s a false dream because it turns into a prison. The more you turn away from fear, the more that you believe that your comfort zone is home. And the more time you spend there, the more you become convinced that because you haven’t stepped though the fear, you can’t. So I guess now it’s time for me to stop hiding under the covers in bed and get up and face the last of my packing head on — then venture out into the unknown.
