Launch of Bombay 72 East

My sweetheart and I went to the launch party of a bar/restaurant in upmarket Juhu, called Bombay 72 East (the name is based on the longitude location of Bombay). What a contrast to my recent night of meeting the family! We were invited because we’re friends with one of the DJs there.

The place was beautifully decorated in deep red tones with a lounge, fine dining area, courtyard, and open air terrace. There were shamiana style tents for privacy and chilling out on the terrace. The party was rocking with some electro and house music, and we were enjoying the free drinks immensely. Apparently some Bollywood stars were present, although in my ignorance, I was none the wiser. The rest of the crowd mainly consisted of well off locals, wearing the usual black, and a few foreigners.

The next day, the Bombay Times reported that “when the official opening timing of a party reads 10 pm, you can be sure it will go on to the wee hours of the morning. And it did on Friday night at the launch party of a new section at Bombay 72 Degrees East….”

What the newspaper didn’t say though was that the police turned up drunk as usual, at around 2.30 am, and closed the party down. One of them pushed his way into the DJ console, pulled a police cap out of his pocket, put it on, and escorted our friend outside. Apparently, he was going to be taken to jail.

I can never seem to find much respect for any Indian policemen, particularly after their useless and bothersome presence in Varkala and Manali. Their unethical behaviour disgusted me so much so that I ran after them in pursuit (as I have a dubious history of doing), holding my wine glass and yelling at them in Hindi… what are you doing? What’s the problem? (En route I decided the wine glass probably wasn’t a good look and hid it under a nearby car).

The commotion I caused distracted the police enough to pay attention. Surprisingly, they listened to our friend’s explanation that he was only doing his job, and let him go. If the police had taken him to jail as their trophy, they would’ve made all sorts of demands for his release. Fortunately, my craziness had a good outcome!

Love what I can see of the style of the lounge… Gotta love the deep tones of India.
