Happy Holi!
Holi is India’s Festival of Colours. It got its name from Lord Krishna, a re-incarnation of Lord Vishnu. He liked to play pranks on the village girls by drenching them in water and colours.
People celebrate Holi by smearing each other with coloured powder and water. They call it “playing Holi”.
This year was the second time I played Holi in India. The first time was when I was living in Calcutta, in 2006. We went to a big Holi party at a farmhouse just outside the city. There was unlimited free alcohol and bhang. I got covered in red colour and spent days trying to get the stain off my face. I literally scrubbed it til it was raw, which resulted in a huge scab. It was really unsightly.
This time, we stayed home and joined the Holi party that was being held in the apartment complex. It’s really common for housing societies to get together and hold their own parties in Mumbai. The parties usually consist of music and a “rain dance” — sprinklers that spray water from above, while everyone dances below.
I got dirty. However, I also got smarter and smeared hair oil on my face to prevent the colour from soaking into my skin. It washed off really easily this time!
