Returning to Australia

in Visiting Australia

After regularly wanting to flee India and go home to Australia last year, my thoughts are finally almost a reality. I’m returning to Australia tomorrow night, for six weeks.

I’m really looking forward to having my anonymity back, catching the end of summer, and being able to bare a bit of leg! What I’m not looking forward to is feeling like a stranger in my own country. After a year away, familiar things become odd.

The Australian accent is always the worst. Not far behind are Australian dress standards. Do we really sound and look like that? After the veritable neatness and modesty of Indian clothing, many of us Australians appear to be an untidy lot. Then, there’s the noticeable absence of people on the roads in Australia. It feels deserted compared to India.

I wish I could have a nice relaxing time in Australia. However, I’m going with an agenda. In keeping with my new year’s resolution, a large part of my time is going to be spent sorting out the remainder of my old life there. Excess possessions must be sold off, and the remainder boxed up and stored at my parents’ house. I’m prepared for it to be traumatic. I can’t fully commit myself to my life in India unless I do it though.

I really do think I’m going to miss India while I’m away. After becoming used to India’s lively state of disarray, I’m already wondering whether I’ll find Australia to be dull. Living between two countries and cultures seems like fun, but it does require constant adjusting.
