I Love the Ivy Wine Cafe

Ivy Wine Cafe, Malad.

Ivy Wine Cafe, Movie Time Complex, Off Link Road, Malad.

One of the things I really missed when I came to India was good wine. Indians are only just discovering wine. Although its popularity as a drink is growing every year, it can still be a challenge to find reasonably priced, decent quality wine here.

Therefore I was rapt to discover the Ivy Wine Cafe. The creation of Chateau Indage, one of India’s premier wine makers, it’s THE place to go if you want to relax and enjoy a glass or few of wine in Mumbai. It’s got three convenient branches in Mumbai — Worli Naka, Versova, and Malad.

I ended up at the Versova one by accident, while looking for somewhere to have a drink with a friend. It’s located on JP Road. However, the Malad one is close to home, so it’s the cafe that my husband and I go to often.

We went there today, intending to have a late breakfast. Instead, we ended up ordering a bottle of wine and having a long brunch. It’s hard to avoid doing because the cost of the wine is so reasonable, at only a little above retail price.

The cheapest offering is a glass of unidentified red for only 40 rupees. However, wines from all over the world are available. The average cost of a bottle of wine is around 600 rupees, which is quite a contrast to the 1,500 rupees you’d be looking at paying at restaurants elsewhere. Discounts are available for take away purchases, so you can enjoy the wine at home too!

The food is good enough. It’s also reasonably priced, and consists of a range of Mediterranean offerings such a pasta, pizza, salads, and appetizers.

And the environment? Very inviting.

Ivy Wine Cafe is open daily from 9 a.m. until 11 p.m.

Footnote: As of 1 June, the Ivy Wine Cafe in Malad is closed. I’m so very disappointed.

Hi Sharrell, I stumbled on this blog via google. I am an ex-Mumbaikar (of sorts) who’s been living in the UK for the past 11 years. But my first love, in city terms, has always been mumbai. And I always keep pining to get back but am not able to do so due to various reasons (family i.e wife, daughter starting school etc). Your blog evokes so much nostalgia in me and you are such an amazingly expressive writer. I shall keep living the mumbai life vicariously through your blog posts. And it’s a bit ironic that I am finding all this out from the blogs of a foreigner living in mumbai :-) , maybe I should start a blog about a brown guy in the UK :-) and someone might find solace in my writings. My parents still live near mumbai and I will be visiting them in a week’s time and will make it a point to vist all the new (for me) places that you’ve mentioned (Ivy wine cafe, Hypercity. I’d been to in-orbit the last time I was in mumbai)
Cheers
Amit

Hi Amit! Thanks for reading and for your kind feedback. I’m so glad you enjoy my writing. :-D I definitely think you should start a blog about living in the UK. I for one would love to read it. I’m sure there must be so many things that you find weird and different over there. I can imagine you would have a whole different set of challenges too. I’ve always wondered how Indian people adjust to western life. Should my husband and I ever live in Australia, I’ll definitely be writing about it! Hope you enjoy your trip to Mumbai! :-)

Hi Sharrell! I will try my best to enjoy my trip to India this time. As for a blog yes I have thought quite a few times about it and will definitely look at shortlisting which blog site to use. Although having said that, in terms of finding things wierd about UK, it’s a bit late for that coz it’s been so long since I’ve been here and I am used to most things by now. :-) I read your latest post (incense sticks) and it’s so refreshing to see how you’ve embraced the Indian culture and how you enjoy the simple things about life in India (vada pav is my favourite too :-D ). And hat’s off to your pioneering spirit i.e. it must have taken a lot of integrity/commitment to decide to marry an Indian bloke and settle with him in India! Ciao Amit

Hi Sachin, yep, they’re still open and I think a new branch has opened up somewhere in the Churchgate area too. Mmmmm, the smell of good wine! :-D
