The Wisdom of Indian Politics

India COULD become a world superpower. However, it won’t if some political parties get to implement their ideas.

The upcoming Lok Sabha elections, for the powerful lower house of Parliament, have really brought to the fore the diversity of thinking in India. A fine example of this is the agenda put forth by the Samajwadi (Socialist) political party.

The Samajwadi Party hails from Uttar Pradesh, surrounded by India’s poorest areas. A great deal of its support comes from backwards castes. It seems that the party also wants to drag India’s progress back by decades.

Here are some of the things it wants to do:

  • Abolish schools that teach their curriculum using English — because English medium schools are expensive and elitist.
  • Limit the use of computers — because computers automate work and take away jobs.
  • Get rid of agricultural machines — because agricultural machines take away labouring jobs.

Interestingly, the party leader’s children were apparently educated at English medium schools.

What’s more, there are few agricultural machines in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Yet, so many people from these states are jobless and coming to Mumbai and Delhi looking for work.

The Government of Bihar admits that the level of agricultural productivity in the state is below the national average, except for maize. Therefore, wouldn’t it be better to focus on trying to increase production? And trying to increase India’s competitiveness among developing countries?
