I remember when I first came to India for a holiday, way back in 2000, I was so thrilled to see my first cow on the street. So it was true! Cows did roam the streets in India. I didn’t have to wait long to see a cow either. It happened as soon as I arrived — in the middle of the night, on the way from Delhi airport to my hotel.
Now that I see cows on the road almost every day, I hardly notice them anymore. This magnificent creature is an exception though. I noticed him immediately. His long bright red horns give him such a graceful air.
He hangs out near the fish market, along the back streets of Mahavir Nagar in Kandivali West.

isn’t this a female cow?
I love the painting of horns on the cows in India – I’m especially appreciative when I see that the cart driver has matched the horn color & the cart color.
Can’t beat ‘em? – He’s definitely a male. The bit hanging down is where his manhood is hiding.
In the bovine circles, one would imagine that it’s pretty offensive to refer to a bull or an ox as a cow, even more so as male cow.
Holy cow! There must be lots of offended Indian male cows out there! So I’ve discovered he’s actually a zebu (???), of which a male is known as a Brahim bull or an Indian ox. Anything but a cow.
lol. Anyway, he’s very impressive!
This one is from a expensive bread. They can be tall! They are used for cart pulling. You might have spotted his partner around.
There are specific bull trade markets in rural areas where one can buy/sell/auction them.
And there is a festival for them too. They are decorated with stuff, horns painted (usually Orange, as you can see in picture), fed sweets and worshipped. See – http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pola_(festival)
