My Favourite Time of the Day in India

in Daily Life in India

Incense at home.

Burning incense at home.

It’s almost dusk. I’ve put the lights on and burnt some incense to encourage Laxsmi (the goddess of wealth and prosperity) to come into the apartment. The heady aroma of the incense wafts warmly through the rooms inside, and is so relaxing. Outside, children are joyfully playing cricket in the courtyard.

The area around the apartment building is starting to come alive. The warm glow from the shops, and the smell of fresh spices from the roadside snack stalls, invites people into the streets.

Times like this really remind me why I have chosen to live in India.

Hey Sharell,
the more i read ur posts, the more i feel like meeting you.Feels really nice to seen an expat, trying to make the most of what India has to offer.Despite all the cultural and lifestyle differences between India and Australia, you have chosen to be in India, shows that love conquers all.It rekindles hope in ppl like me who are absolute romantics..

PS: you can burn dhoop batti in place of incense sticks, they last longer and create less fumes.
have a good day ahead.

Its da best part of da day for me as well.Apart from da incense,I light a diya & my daughter & son do da aarti & I blow da conch.Derafter v offer prasad to God which is eaten later by the family. Its r family tradition dat v hav morning & evening aarti & all da members shud be present during atleast 1 aarti, which happens at dusk in our family.Evenings widout dhoop, agarbatti, diya & da sound of conch seem incomplete now!

Wow, that sounds really beautiful, especially all the family gathering together like that. It’s something that’s really missing in Australian culture.

Oh, and we had the conch at our wedding. It was so funny to see everyone try and blow it! :-P
