It’s Sunday, so what do the people of Bombay like to do? Head to the beach! Juhu and Girgaum (Marine Drive) Chowpatty are the most popular ones.
Going to the beach in India isn’t like going to the beach in the West though. You won’t find any bikini clad sunbathers. Instead, the beach resembles a circus scene.
Cows roam freely.
Monkeys perform tricks.
People frolic fully clothed in the water. And vendors line the shore.
There are coconut sellers. Balloon sellers. A guy selling flutes. And women selling bangles and henna stamps.
If you get hungry, there are also plenty of snack stands to cater to your appetite.
Of course, there’s the weird and wonderful as well. Such as these animals being hand crafted out of sand.
It makes a very entertaining day out!

hi !!
d pics are vibrant n colorful … u must come 2 puri beach sumtym.its quite different 4m mumbai beaches. n i hope u’ll love dem….
For sure! We’re hoping to come to Orissa later in the year when the weather is much cooler.
I really want to see it. I’ve never been there…
Wow, Sharell, is it realy real? Indians don´t get sun bath? As they don´t wear bikinis and go in to the water fully chothed. Is it the same in those quiet and clean beaches? They don´t swim in swiming clothes? Gee, that sounds anthropological.
Hi Daniela, it’s real! Although, modern young women will wear bikinis in Goa. You’ll rarely see them sun bathing though because they want to remain as fair as possible. At most beaches, you’ll see Indian women fully clothed although some will also wear modest swimming costumes that cover most of their body. Very anthropological!
Hi Daniela…Why are you shocked?…Isn’t it obvious?…Well, I mean India ain’t so liberal…..and people aren’t used to that and are scared/embarrassed to disclose their assets. Apart from that, India is much crowded…So, you don’t get much space to do this, comfortably. When I was in India, I was a bit concerned too, but now I wear Man-kini’s like Borat and also go naked in the Sauna’s.
Also, I know a couple of American/Brits/Australians, who were surprised seeing people going naked at lakes/beaches/Sauna’s, in Germany…Well, culture shock!
Sharell: This time, you go to the beach, you should ask/force your hubby to wear Man-kini’s…If you don’t know what that is, just ask your friend, Google. I’m sure, you will have great fun!
Ugh, that’s disgusting. There’s no way I’m having his assets on display!!! (And nor do I display my own.
) I insist that he follows the Aussie style of wearing board shorts… swimming shorts that go to the knee. I don’t even let him wear speedos (briefs).
Hi Prashanth
Well, I guess I feel more like surprised than shocked. It makes me remember my grandmother´s time. At her youth (around 1930-40), she would go dressed to the beach, with pants, blouse and a big hat. She would not go into the water though. Only man did that in big swiming suits. And today I feel it is so good to swim in proper clothes (that dry fast) and be able to take sun bath. Anyway Sharell, good to know some women wear some kind of swimming suits. Amazing India.
As for the european, I heard they do sauna naked. Well I don´t feel confortable with that. Yes, cultures along the globe are very different. And sure beaches in India must be the most crowd. Still, during summer time any beach get crowd. It´s just different.
hi… i love mumbai pepole too great and good all ………………………….
Ok seeing that crowdy beach I take back what said in the other comment
I wouldn’t spend most of my days there. I imagined beaches to be secluded places where you can run away from this mess in the city
well I guess I was wrong. There is nowhere where u can run
Fortunately, they are two different beaches. This one is in the popular Mumbai suburb of Juhu. The other one is in the far outer northern suburbs, which isn’t so accessible to the hoards.
