My Husband Cooked Dinner Tonight

Dinner cooked by my husband.

Dinner cooked by my husband.

After all the negative publicity that the Indian male has received lately, I’m happy to say that mine did something pleasantly surprising tonight. He cooked dinner.

That in itself isn’t too surprising. He can make basic dishes such as aloo ka bhaji, and stir fry. What really astonished me though, was that he made chapattis as well (and cleaned up after himself).

At first, I thought he’d sneaked out and bought the chapattis. However, upon closer inspection they revealed themselves to be home made. They certainly were interesting shapes. And they were quite crispy in some places. But they were chapattis!

Making chapattis is no easy task for a beginner, so I think he did incredibly well. I’m so happy and proud of him (and I think he’s pretty proud of himself too). He’s definitely earned his coffee in bed tomorrow morning!

Looks delicious! But where’s the daal? ”I’m so happy and proud of him (and I think he’s pretty proud of himself too). He’s definitely earned his coffee in bed tomorrow morning!”

That means Indian wives have earned coffee/chai in bed every day, all day, for the rest of their lives. Do they get it?

A man does something once and gets accolades for it. A woman does it daily and gets no reward, because its just taken for granted. Why do men get rewarded for doing things that are well, just ordinary, normal, day to day necessites – like cooking?

Somebody translate “The Second Sex” into Hindi!

(But it does look yummy!)

Nice, Sharell! Kudos to him!

My husband is a great cook…he’s the one who taught me to cook Indian food. Cooking is a stress reliever for both of us, so if we’ve had a long day or week we like to tackle a new recipe together to destress. One of the things he makes that impresses people is jalebis. We also teach Indian cooking classes at a local gourmet shop from time to time–we’re doing one next month and the theme will be “Indian Street Foods” like pau bhaji, etc.

I’m impressed that your husband also cleaned up afterward! Nice!

I asked the husband what he wanted for dinner tomorrow… its fathers day… and he said MEAT PIE… yeah the one you described!

Oh yeah, Kiran!! The best thing was when my MIL came to visit, and before she left, she filled half our freezer with homemade parathas and chapatis, parcooked like the ones you can buy at the grocery store. It was a sad day when we ran out of those! I can make chapatis pretty easily, but don’t go to the trouble of making parathas from scratch very often.

The meal looks yummy! My chapathis looked like the maps of various continents when I used to make them. I’ve pretty much given up now.

Yum!
My husband can only make chana, and rajma. And a few months back, I made the mistake of making chana one night…now chana masala duties fall squarely on my shoulders, too! Not making that mistake with the rajma, I’ll tell you that :)

My husband reckons he’s going to make channa masala next!. It’s one of his favourite foods but I don’t cook it often enough.

D, your husband sounds very impressive with his culinary skills. Both of you giving cooking classes — how good is that!

Thanks, Sharell! I got pretty lucky. He had to learn to cook when he lived in Germany for a while…it was either that, or never eat Indian food, and he did NOT like German food!

D – I can well understand that! I’ve been to Germany and didn’t like the food either!

Ramit, I must admit you sound very unusual for an Indian man. What’s with all this cooking and cleaning? :-P Do you not leave anything for your beloved wife to do? ;-)

Hi Sharell,
There is nothing unusual about it. In our home, I cook about 60% of the time in our home. :-)

Mmmm, what do you cook? I find that when Indian men do cook, they do it amazingly well.

ummm…Mostly simple Indian food. Daal, Chicken curry (not the restaurant type chicken tikka masala that people like over here but rather simple home made, chicken curry), kichdi, egg curry, fish curry (not as comprehensive as your recipe unfortunately). I am also learning how to grill different stuff like salmon, chicken, corn etc. we are loving it !!

Mom taught me how to cook fast with pressure cooker (even though it is sometimes more tasty to cook without pressure cooker) but we are both working and mostly tired in evenings so too much time spent cooking is usually not possible.

Wifey loves to clean the house and do laundry but hates cooking, doing the dishes.
I love doing the dishes but hate to clean the house or do laundry so we divide labor.

unfortunately, i dont like cooking too but i cant survive on mashed potatoes, burgers, pizzas alone. heheh so cooking it is :)

I would give an arm and a leg for dabbawalla in mumbai !! :)
