Monsoon Rain in Mumbai

It rained a lot in Mumbai yesterday. Apparently, it was the highest amount of rainfall since the onset of the monsoon this year.

Of course, several parts of the city became waterlogged in a major way, despite the BMC’s (Brihanmumbai Municipal Council) claims of preparedness. Train services on the Harbour Line came to a halt, Andheri subway was badly flooded, and a wall of the Bandra Terminus collapsed.

I travelled from Kandivali West to Santa Cruz, via Juhu, in an auto rickshaw. It took nearly two hours and was quite an adventure!

The road opposite the Big B’s home in Juhu was submerged in knee deep water. It was lapping at the sides of the rickshaw, threatening to pour in. The rickshaw driver feared that his rickshaw would get waterlogged and would stop running. I felt the same way. Fortunately, we managed to slowly make it through the water somehow. And despite lurching and spluttering a lot, the rickshaw kept moving afterward.

It was very difficult to avoid getting wet. Therefore, I shouldn’t have been surprised to see the crowds of people frolicking in the ocean at Juhu Beach. If you’re going to get saturated, you might as well have fun doing it!

I used to love getting drenched when I walked home from school …. of course had to hear an earful from my mother but I was okay with it as long as she made some hot snacks :P . BTW is the worst over for Mumbai??

That sounds like sweet memories PGB! :-)

I think it’s only just beginning for Mumbai. We’ve got the highest tide in 100 years (over 5 metres apparently) coming up on 24 July. If it rains heavily I hate to think what will happen!

hope you know how to swim ;) and rain coats, full body rain coats are important…. umbrella is pretty much useless in India especially when you know that the water splashed by the passing vehicle is more damaging than the actual rain itself.

Definitely! Coming from a country surrounded by water, I don’t have much choice but to swim. ;-) However, I’m thinking of taking the BMC’s advice and just getting the heck out of the city!

Sharell getting out of Mumbai is certainly an option..in Pune there isnt water to drink or wash…water tankers can be seen distributing water (ofcourse you pay for it) everywhere..barely 200kms away we have a drought!!..i am glad to escape the pune drought over the weekend but mumbai’s water clogged streets dont make me any happy either!

We made a visit to Kerala during the monsoon last year. Munnar was so beautiful – waterfalls everywhere. Are you familiar with the Seascapes resort in Ernakulam? Truly a wonderful place to visit.

Era — is it this place? http://www.nivalink.com/waterscapes/index.html Looks amazing if it is. I’m definitely making a note of it!

viksdes — I read that the situation was grim in Pune but I didn’t know it was that bad. :-( How terrible. Wish we could send some of this rain there.

Hmmm… seems all this rain isn’t helping Mumbai either because it’s not falling in the reservoirs. An increase from a 20% to a 30% water cut was announced today.

I hate Mumbai monsoon.

I was in Mumbai for 2 yrs and I left Mumbai because of the monsoon and all the troubles one has to face like water logging and traffic jam, delayed trains due to monsoon.

Monsoon in Mumbai definitely creates problems every year..but this year we are also getting reports about this strange thing in the city..Well we received this snap from a train passenger..if u think water logging is the reason behind the trains being disrupted check this out.. http://tinyurl.com/nb72j3
