Post image for Bed Sheet from Orissa

My mother-in-law gave this beautiful bed sheet to my mum. It’s from Orissa, and has been handwoven in the traditional design. My mum loves it so much, she thinks it’s way too good to use as a sheet. Instead, she’s put in on the bed as a bedspread. We bought the cushion from a department store to give it a bit of extra decoration.

I love the bed sheet too, and admittedly wanted to keep it for myself!

Little by little, my parents’ house getting the desi touch. They also have Indian table decorations, a set of the ubiquitous stainless steel cups and plates, and even a small Ganesh statue.

I love when the cross cultures mix and old stand-bys get new uses. I was using furoshiki as table cloths forever until a Japanese person pointed out that they are “wrapping paper cloths.” And all of my friends use wooden bento boxes (lunch boxes) for jewelry because they are way too beautiful to be used for food, whereas all of my coworkers think nothing of packing rice in them. I think it is one of the fun ways to bring about healthy dialogue on cultural differences and the way the east and west differ in thinking. What is everyday and ordinary becomes extraordinary when transplanted across the globe. And its great for your parents to be able to ease into the desi culture piece by piece.

is there a prize for first? “I’d like to thank the scheduler at work for not penciling me in for any classes today and I’d like to thank the Japanese language for being so frustrating that I constantly need a break from studying…”

Ramit November 24, 2009 at 1:00 pm

Hi Motoakijane, there might not be a prize, but evil (adorable) Cathy will be unhappy with you! :D

Hehe motoakijane…I like to see that another has an appreciation of being first…so far I have been the only one I have seen comment on it so now I feel totally normal (but darn it, wish I was still in my old job which was boring enough that I was on the iphone all the time…am in day two of a new one so still being good and all). Yes, Ramit understands my (evil NOT adorable) childishness lol.

And loooove the sheet! I want it…and the cushion cover too…is that from here or there? I need details!

Sharell November 24, 2009 at 3:33 pm

Hehe funny…I was in there yesterday on my lunchbreak and thinking about some of them ‘now THAT is what I was looking for in India’ lol…think I may have to actually visit my local shopping centre to find one…would match the bedcover I bought in Mumbai sooo perfectly!

Reenu(Laureen) xanga.com November 25, 2009 at 2:39 am

Its beautiful…and you have Target over there in Australia? Hey Cathy, how come you can’t buy dryer sheets?

V. November 25, 2009 at 3:22 am

You need to get your mum one of those spice tins ( for the different spices when she cooks) for the kitchen. Then she can be a desi mama while she cooks :)

On a side note, I brought the best dress from Target the other week. The Bourke St store has the best range!

Lovely bedsheet. Infact it looks more like a bed spread than a bed sheet… Personally, I like very light coloured bedsheets and vibrant bed spreads… So that suits my taste… :)

Btw,

Just dropped in to tell you that This is my new blog. I would be glad if you follow it too. You have always been a valuable visitor. And your comments are really imp…

Cheers :)
