Cooking Indian Food for My Family in Australia

Yesterday, I did something that I never thought I’d do. I spent seven hours in the kitchen, cooking Indian food!

Initially, my cousin and I were simply going to get together and prepare a couple of dishes for fun. Then, my aunty decided to invite the whole family and turn it into a Christmas Party. To our horror, we found ourselves having to cater for over 20 people.

Somehow, I managed to prepare an extensive menu. Fish curry, garlic prawn curry, dahiwali chicken curry (huge thanks to reader D.Jain for pointing me in the direction of this fabulously simple and tasty recipe!), mixed vegetable curry, spinach potatoes, daal, and rice. My mum also made a chickpea salad, and a huge bowl of mango lassi.

I was exhausted after so much cooking! It was worth it though. The party was a resounding success. My dad even dressed up and wore a turban (which I’d brought him from Rajasthan) for the occasion. With his beard, he looked like he’d be more at home in the Punjab though!

Now, my aunty has decided every Christmas party will have a theme for the food. We have a family friend who’s Italian, so I think she’s next in line to do the catering!

Hi Sharell,
I’d love to know what exactly is in the typical mango lassi, the sweet version so I could do it at home. I’d very happy if you tell me!

Thanks Sharell for ur appreciation. In fact I have only mentioned few of the spices almost all ingredients used in Indian cooking has some or the other benefits. In fact here in Austrailia, I have met many Australians who strongly believe in Ayurveda and u know ayurdevdic medicines are made from Indian spices herbs. The other day I met a lady at Indian grocery and she was buying some Indian spicies for her mother who is suffering from cancer and a Ayurvedic doctor had prescribed her some medicine which was a blend of some spices to be taken along with Indian (Desi) Ghee.

In India u must have seen people chewing Paan (Beetle leaf).Again ,there are some benefits related to chewing paan.Just check the below link.May be u find it interesting.
