I’ve been learning Hindi on and off, with various degrees of enthusiasm, since I realised India was going to be huge part of my life around four years ago. I’ve got more than five Hindi textbooks, which I used to study relentlessly. They’ve been really helpful. However, being surrounded by Hindi every day has helped me the most.
I still struggle to use the correct expressions and grammar, but my pronunciation is acceptable now and I can even read Hindi albeit very slowly.
Some of the readers of this blog have mentioned that they’d like to have discussions in Hindi, or about Hindi, to help them learn. It’s a great idea, so I’ve created this post especially and moved the relevant comments here.
If anyone has any questions about Hindi, this is the place to ask them! There are lots of people who are much more knowledgeable than me, who will be happy to help. We’ll even have a “Hindi Word of the Day”.
Ham log sikh sakte hain! (All of us can learn.)

Da wait is over now!I was goin 2 write dis on 27th but earlier it ws jst my SIL who ws cumin ovr 2 my place, but yday v wer informed dat my BIL n der 3 kids r also cumin ovr. So,I dnt think I’ll hav da tym 2 visit ur blog till atleast tuesday,so here’s da poem(do send it 2 ur hubby & tell me wot was his response):
Aur sabr nahi hota humse,
Ji rahe the kal tak teri yaadon ke dum se.
Jaise-jaise milan ki ghadi pas aa rahi hai,
Khwab haseen tumhare dikhla rahi hai.
Man mein goonj raha hai ek hi sawal,
kya tumhara bhi hai mere jaisa haal?
Ki ab toh din kaate nahi katta hai,
Man tumse milne ke khayalon me hi atka hai.
Nigahen tumhari deed ko tarasti hain,
Har roz tumhari yad me barasti hain.
Tumhara chehra hai ki nazron ke saamne se hatta hi nahi,
Kuch bhi kyun na kar lu,dil kahin lagta hi nahi.
Ki ab toh sukoon tumse milne par hi aayega,
Woh lamha hume khushi k aansu rulayega.
Haay!Na jane kab wo waqt aayega
Jab ye man tumhe dekhkar chain payega…
Translation:I cant have any more patience now,
till yesterday I was living here wid da help of ur memories.
As da day we’ll meet comes near,
it is showin me some wonderful dreams!
I am pondering over one question,
R u also havin such thoughts in ur mind?
Now,its becomin very difficult to pass my days
My mind is stuck with thoights of meeting u.
My eyes are longing to hav a glimpse of u,
dey shed tears every tym wen I remember u.
Ur face just doesnt go away from my eyes,
No matter wot I do,my heart cant find peace anywer now.
Now I feel I’ll find peace only after I meet u,
I’ll have tears of joy in my eyes in dat moment.
I dont knw wen dat tym will come,
Wen I’ll find solace after seeing you.
I’ll post da word meanings later.Merry X’mas 2 u & ur family!Take care,hav a safe flight!I’ll b back here soon!
Waaaah!
Suhani ji should start writing lyrics for film songs cause her lyrics are over the top.
Suhani is quite a poet it seems…..Nice poem by the way!
Wondering where Evil Cathy is…….Havent seen her around here for sometime now….Hiya! Are you out there?
OK….My comment didnt come up…I probably think they’re stuck in the filter….but thats a very optimistic perspective…..More likely, its seems that I’ve been banned..probably due to that verbal duel with Amit…So before leaving….Merry Xmas and a hopefully happy new year to all.
….And thats a genuine Xmas wish….No Malice in that at all.
Wish you Sharelll and ur family a very merry xmas and happy new years! Dr D wish you the same!!
Ahhh!!……I am really relieved…..Last night I REALLY got scared!….I REALLY thought I’d been banned for real….Thank God thats not the case. A reason to smile this Christmas, I guess
Death’s head Doctor Death? I’m not coming to you for treatment for sure! ROFL!
Yeah Ramit, thats my new username……I’ll be using it now and then…..I also have another username up my sleeve but I fear it’ll completely ruin my “Dark” “persona” here on this blog…
Just kidding…..But I have that another username for sure….100% true.
Thank you everyone!
Hi there….everybody seems to be enoying their holidays right now…except me.I spent the entire day battling my occasional bout of hypertension…..Phew! No kidding…..Its just that my mother was about to commute to Ranchi via train today morning….And that got me really worried. Not that shes never travelled before…..Its just that when I got up in the morning today, I got a strange sickening feeling that she’d never return….If you know what I mean ( Specially because Maoist violence is rampant in my state) I shouldnt be saying things like this…But at the end of the day I thought that the best way to let it go would be to write about it here…and I already feel relieved.
Let’s just stop at death’s tail. That should be enough!
well ramit, I came up with Anubis!!
OK, Sitting here in front of the computer…..on new yaers eve….Nothing special to od and no…no parties….Not really in the mood to go to a BIG public gathering..no..So wishing all a Happy new year…hopefully a happy new year…that is.
Every year we wish each other a happy new year and yet something undesirable happens to ensure that the new year is NEVER happy at all…
Mixed emotions on every new year’s eve as usual.
Oh! and I am currently listening to ‘Tum Mile’ title track….Sharell, try it out! Beautiful Beautiful Beautiful song!!…..
Naye saal ki pehli shayari:
Arz kia hai :
Kal naa jaane kya samaa hoga,
Hum me se naa jaane kaun kahaan hoga?
Phir milnaa hua,toh milenge yaadon mein,
Jaise sukhe huye phool milte hain kitaabon mein.
Translation:
No one knows wot tomorrow(future) will be like,
or where all of us will be tomorrow?
Den we’ll meet each in our fond memories,
like dry flowers are found in books.
Word meanings:
Kal-tomorrow
na jane-dont know
kya-what
sama-situation/circumstances
hum-we
kaun-who
kahan-where
phir-den
milna(V)-to meet
milenge(future tense)-will meet
yaadon mein-in memories
jaise-like
sukhe-dried
phool(plural)-flowers
kitab-book
Nice and well written poem Suhani ji. Talking about flowers in a book, somebody said putting a peacocks feather in a book makes it grow longer, so I decided to put a crows feather in a book, waited for months just to find out that the feather shrank.
@Indian American
Thank you!
@Sharell,Claudia
Da word for today is ‘Shubh-kaamnaaye’ which means good-wishes/best wishes.
e.g. Aapko meri or se naye saal ki dhero shubhkaamnaaye!
My Good wishes to you for the new year!
Thanks Suhani for being so nice and perseverant and choosing the word of the day for us!! Oh, and Happy New Year, may you get all your dreams come true in 2010!!
sharell,
why not lets have a new topic where everyone has to only write in hindi with english translation to it too, so that way u will have better chance to read as well as write your own hindi words with few english words for those words you dont know how to speak in hindi, and all of us will help you in improving your speech.
Rather than just few os us writing sometime in hindi i guess thats not helping much.
What say?
That sounds like a great idea.
I must apologise for neglecting the Hindi topic. I really appreciate everyone’s efforts (especially Suhani) for keeping it going. I’ve just been a bit overwhelmed settling back into life in Mumbai, and getting life in order. Needless to say, I have been speaking Hindi though.
@Claudia
May God bless U!
Thanks a lot!Happy New Year 2 u 2!
@Vik
I liked ur idea!Dis is surely goin 2 help a lot!Wot say,Sharell?
Dats ok Sharell.U can go thru da topics anytym u feel lyk learning Hindi. Its my pleasure 2 help u,no need for thanx!
Wow I’d love to learn! Does anyone know of a good website where I can learn? Although it seems so hard.. For a short sentence with 3 english words, a Hindu sentence seems to have 13 words!
Hi Christine, oh I fully understand where you’re coming from! I still can’t believe how complicated some Hindi sentences are. I used to always go on about all the seemingly unnecessary words in a sentence compared to English!! The hardest part I find is the grammar.
You can try this website: http://www.hindilearner.com/
Der’s a sayin in Hindi.
“Nari tu Narayani”
Naari-Woman
tu-you
Naaraayani-Goddess/God-like
It means that women should be considered akin to God because apart from the Almighty, only women have the power to give birth. They should be respected because they have the divine power of bringing a new life on da Earth. While I was commenting on ur other post ‘Reflecting on 2009′ dis adage crossed my mind,so I thought of putting it down here.My mom had told me dis one wen I was expecting. She said dat we women should feel blessed & be thankful 2 God for choosing us to share his power.Yet der r so many women who willingly do not go for motherhood or kill the unborn child even wen der r no social pressures on dem.Den she said sumtyn wondeful-She said:giving birth to a child is certainly one of the most difficult tasks.A woman who can withstand the enormous hardships during pregnancy & who can bear the terrible pain while giving birth to a child, should believe that she can do everything.Nothing is impossible for her!Every other pain/hardship in this world is nothing in front of labour pain.Remember dis wenever u face a difficult situation in life.
I’ve a horrible back pain that troubles me a lot, especially during winters.Wenever I feel lyk I cant bear it anymore,I remember my mom’s words.I instantly start feeling better!
Not every woman wants to be a mother.
I love the Suhani approach to learning Hindi. I am fascinated by Hindi. I love the way the words sound. I was thinking of buying the Rosetta Stone Method. I went to the website to find out if they have a Hindi program and they do. Just thought I’d ask for some feedback on the best way to learn Hindi when you don’t actually come into contact with Hindi speakers.
@ Linda Smythe,
What makes you learn or become interested in Hindi? (Just curious).
Kya Baat Hai Sharel “Balle Balle Melbourne Se Mumbai”
(adapted from Balle Balle Amritsar to LA (Bride and Prejudice (based on Pride and Prejudice Novel) 2004 movie.
This is a fantastic idea. My friend started teaching me Hindi, and my boyfriend is always surprised when I randomly came out with sentences, or sent him messages in his own language. Still, I can’t say I know much haha, & my Geordie accent doesn’t help my pronunciation haha!
Just wanted to say that I love Rosetta Stone and I’ve learned enough Hindi from it to carry on basic conversations. It has been a great jumping off point for learning more. It’s expensive, but totally worth it in my opinion.
@ Sharell
“Agar mein edar hindi sikhaya toh mere students yahaan se bhaag jaayega. Is liye mein hindi adhyapak nahin banega.
If I taught beautiful Hindi, my students will go to the garden from here. For this, I won’t make a Hindi teacher.
(I hope this is what it means).

Bhag=Garden… ????
Hahahahaha…. Sharell rocks..!!
Bhag Jayega= “Will Run”
So what’s garden then… must be baag? I still have a few challenges to overcome.
