It was dusk, and some friends and I were waiting for an auto rickshaw in Bandra yesterday. We were standing on the side of Linking Road — one of the suburb’s busiest roads. All of a sudden, a line of four cows decided to cross the road and without hesitating, boldly walked out into the traffic. A vegetable vendor came the other way, pushing his neatly stacked wooden cart. Auto rickshaws streamed past. And, a police vehicle as well.
Everything goes in Mumbai. And after all these years, I still pull my camera out to take photos of it!

Hahha, well captured!
Ah ! Ah ! The vegetable wallah took advantage of the cows’ crossing to get himself safely across the street !!!
Correct!
You captured the cow again?
Can’t help it… it’s everywhere… gets in every darn photo!
Such an awesome photo Sharell. Makes me want to fly back asap just to be part of the mayhem!
And you could just imagine the honking that was accompanying the mayhem!
Made me want to hop on a plane and be back in India again (as often happens!)
Makes me nostalgic…things happen spontaneously in India. I’m sure the honking must have been irritating though.
Nice. moo.
Cows must have got tired of waiting (known to be patient) and went for the crossing
Nice capture..well where else in any country do you see cows crossing busy roads (linking road..phew! i can imagine)..
Where was this, Sharell? Which neighbourhood? Love how organised the vegetables are
A few intersections up from KFC on Linking Road, Bandra/Khar.
Classic
That was my first thought, too. If I saw a cow crossing I would so go along with that. They would be crazy to try to run over a cow!
I love that picture, it really captures the motion as well.
There used to be a time I used to joke saying I would buy myself a cow costume to be able to cross the road safely
That would definitely stop traffic!
In 2008, few couples visited India from the University of British Colombia,Canada, took many photographs here and there, later uploaded them on facebook after the end of thier tour. I saw a comment on one photo out of these, written as “Most of the time in India is spent just trying to imagine how anything works at all.” LOL! This is our India, our sweet, sweet India.
Its hard for me to believe that in foreign countries there are no stray animals on the streets!
this makes me remember an incident.. a friend’s 6 year old cousin had come to Nashik ( its 200km from Mumbai) from Indonesia. One day, he saw a cow on a street..and in surprise, he said to his father, ” Dada, such a BIG dog!! “
The first time I saw a cow walking in town was in the surburbs of London strangely enough. She had escaped from the common grounds and nobody seemed in the least surprised or disturbed.
Sharell ,
I think animals roaming in the streets and roads of India would make those foreigners satisfied a lot who complain that they are charged more than Indians at Taj Mahal and other historical sites.
Here they are able to see Animal Kingdom just in front of them for Free , just like Indians.
No Discrimination.
Sounds just like Nepal
Everything is always happening at once on the streets. So much fun and confusion.
Yeah, some of those market areas in Thamel get pretty crazy! 8)
going to Melbourne after a month for the second time ….
@sharell , what would be some of the peculiar/bizzare things to see in Melbourne
Hi Monty, I’d like you to discover that for yourself, and come back and tell me what you found.
Lol…but don’t forget there was an equal threat to his fruits and vegetables. Imagine what whould have happened if all the cows had stopped right in the middle of the road to have their MEALS
