Post image for I Spy With My Little Eye…

When I wrote about this fellow on my window a while ago, many people said that they didn’t like him. (How mean).

He’s still there and doing very well. He may have even reproduced. If it wasn’t him, it must’ve been one of his relatives. Take a look at the eyes peeking out in the photo above.

I wanted to catch him but he ran away.

So cute!!

yikes! I’m extremely phobic of lizards. I have no issues with snakes or spiders or even cockroaches, but even a tiny gecko darting across the wall can cause a panic attack. Good thing you find these cute! It’ll make living in India or other tropical climates much easier.

The only time I’ve been really freaked out (and a bit disgusted) was in Kerala during the monsoon. There were some really freaky creatures there with many legs (types of millipedes?) and they were quite big!

ADORABLE!! Look at him looking up from the basket lol :)
We have one lizard too that keeps returning to our shower area once in a while….I’ve been living in Mumbai for a month now and so many animals are in my life which is amazing, our neighbor building has 2 families of stray dogs with puppies and I’ve been feeding them dog food and milk for a couple of weeks and its amazing to see how they grow, the very young mums are the loveliest dogs ever, on the way to the dogs there are a couple of cats screaming for food too. Its great too see that the community is reaching out as there is always water and some food for the dogs there. heartwarming!
Sharell you better name this little fellow as you seem to have taken a mutual liking to each other now :)

I loved hearing that you are caring for the stray dogs and puppies in your building and that the community is reaching out . India’s stray animal dilemma is one close to my heart . Thank you for being so kind :)

I can’t help but think of this incident at the B School, me on the breakfast table with my classmate. Everything was normal as we were diggin into the pongal and sambhar with some methu vadais.
Suddenly a fish like thingy on my vegetarian friend’s plate. I wondered how the fish came into the sambhar, till someone declared “Its Lizard”.
Have come to hate lizards from that day!
Now don’t ask me how does the lizard sambhar taste!

I like him.

How did you know it is a boy and not a girl lizard ?

If it is a she, you can perhaps call her E-Lizaa-beth
If male, probably spiderman :-) (yes, that seems to be a common name for lizards)
Also, Milimili (Hawaiian ) = toy, favourite, darling, pet, beloved
Here is a big list of suggestions.

I just call everything a “he” until proven otherwise. The male being the dominant species in India! ;-) But oh, E-liz-abeth. You have quite a sense of humour. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry!

Reply

Neha Sharma March 18, 2012 at 4:08 pm

Its tiny agreed. Its perfectly formed in its own way agreed!!!
But that surely doesn’t make it cute…..
Neways, you can surely keep it as a pet!! I am sure it would love to have a master like you!! hehe :D

Chanakya March 18, 2012 at 2:06 pm

Don’t mind Neha, Australians are totally crazy people. They take the definition of ‘cute’ to a new level. If lizards are cute then I must be Meg Ryan… ;) :)

I love these little critters! We had them in our house in Ghana, West Africa, when I lived there. You can’t keep them out, and they eat mosquitoes and spiders, or so I was told. I didn’t mind them at all, not even the big ones. Love your pictures!

He is so cute! You must give him a name. Or at least a top hat and a cane, because with looks that good, he should be in show business!

It’s so cute!!! We have them too in Durban in South Africa. They enter the houses. My boyfriend is scared and does not like them because they leave “pooh” in the houses. But I love them and take them in my hands sometimes to gently put them out.

Bern March 18, 2012 at 7:11 am

I love this little fellow! Granted he isn’t the cutest of animals but then who cares? Lizards are geat little animals. When hubby and I lived out in Birdsville on the edge of the Simpson Desert (Queensland Australia) I often used to pick upa desert dragon (a lizard with lotso of spikes on his top side, about 4″ long) and wear one around for a little while. They looked a bit scary but loved being carried around on my shoulder. I love geckos too …

Reply

Sharell शारेल March 18, 2012 at 9:46 am

Bern, that is totally amazing and very cool. I don’t think I’d even be game to pick up a bearded dragon. They do look a bit fierce. Back home, there’s an old Blue Tongue lizard that hangs around under the wood pile. My dad picked him up and showed my hubby once, and totally freaked him out!

Sarah March 18, 2012 at 8:12 am

Ooooh not my thing at all. I especially hate how the house lizards in Singapore drop their tails if you try to shoo them away, it’s disgusting! But I do like the sounds of geckos in the night. Ge-cko! Ge-cko! So cute haha!

Reply

Sharell शारेल March 18, 2012 at 9:47 am

We have those small drop tail things back home too! It’s not the best having to clean up a tail. ;-)

Oh he is so sweet I love them ! I can’t understand how anyone can be so afraid of them . My 2 grown men nephews in Delhi scream like girls whenever they see one and call for Mummy to come and get it . :)

Reply

Sharell शारेल March 18, 2012 at 11:41 am

My hubby is also afraid of them. He thinks they’re poisonous. There are too many superstitions spread in India sometimes.

Reply

AG March 20, 2012 at 12:00 am

Well apparently if they fall into food they do cause food poisoning.
I have heard of this meself, but alas i have no citations.

Reply

Chanakya March 20, 2012 at 11:09 pm

Haha ,,,

They run to mummy to deal with lizards because a male can’t deal with a female no matter how little she is. :)

Reply

akhil March 18, 2012 at 1:50 pm

hmmm
I can get used to lizards they are even helpful as they eat insects but one living being which I can never bear a sight of is cockroach. Eww

and poisonous thing is kinda true its like not when they touch or bite but more like when they fall in food there have been cases reported of people fallin ill or rushed to hospital because of somehow eating lizard contaminated food .

Chanakya March 18, 2012 at 2:15 pm

This post has become so lizardous. And going by the fact that so many gorgeous ladies here love them, I better become one in next birth so that I stand a better chance of impressing them. Huh ! ;)

Sharell शारेल March 18, 2012 at 3:25 pm

Yeah, I think you should come to life as a bearded dragon next time, so maybe someone like Bern (in the comments above) will take a liking to you, and pick you up and carry you around on her shoulders.

It’s all interesting, when people from some countries/cultures say that they like ‘em and some not. It’s all because of stigma attached to ‘em in some countries/cultures/societies, for ex., in the case of lizards, there is a sentiment in some parts of india, that if a lizard (that is hanging somewhere on the ceiling/wall) falls on you (I guess, on the head), it brings bad luck or something like you are gonna die, etc etc bollocks.

Reply

vinod March 18, 2012 at 8:06 pm

Oh yes, then there is this superstition as well. If during the conversation, especially in the night, gecko makes it usual sound.
Its akin to it agreeing to it. And people usually do that thing that they were discussing.
There is whole range of beliefs on where the lizard falls.
And also that food becomes poisoned, when lizard falls in it. Infact, thats not true at all!

Cyn March 19, 2012 at 9:32 am

awww he is so cute, I might be one of the few who likes them. Right now I am living in the only place I lived so far in Idnia where I have no Geckos coming for visits, my old flat in Bangalore had several living in my kitchen and bathroom and a few visiting my living room, I loved having them around, they eat mosquitoes :)

Reply

Bronwyn March 19, 2012 at 11:54 am

He’s cute! I have a resident lizard too… I like him because I think he eats mosquitoes :)

Reply

haha love it. Thought i was the only one who found lizards cute. Elizabeths funny and apt name to have or maybe just liz.
I have three at home that come and go as they please. Quite effective pest control :D
interestingly lizards make a sound which i didnt know about until recently. It goes something like ‘tsk tsk tsk’ but really loud. Havent heard it in bombay but in west bengal.

I hope this Phylum has nothing to do with the Phylums that we have in the colleges. One of my friend and colleague at JK Tyre, from RIT Jamsedhpur told me about that Phylum thingy.

i was talking about phylum reptilia.
that classification of biodiversity thingy from biology.

the first point of difference between a man and a lizard.

Reply

Robin March 20, 2012 at 7:39 am

I think lizards can be cute. All reptiles can be carriers of salmonella so I suppose one falling in your food could cause salmonella poisoning. My 9 year old son has had an iguana and a gecko as a pet…at his father’s house. I make it a point of tryin to keep all reptiles outside my house.

He is adorable! However, I am the person who has willing bought her precious progeny a gecko (appropriately named Gordon, of course), so yeah. There is that. *shrugs*

As much as I have paid for geckos and tarantulas, it would actually be nice to get a few of those fellas for free. ;-D

Q> Do kangaroos dance on the streets of Australia ?

Of late I have become quite a vampire. Not the blood sucking type though.
You know Active by night, avoiding sunlight. Seems like India in summer is the perfect place for vampires. I am confused as to why all thoes vampire novels and movies show vampires in dark depressed and cold areas.
Forget vampires the powerful rays can burn even the not so undeads.

Reply

Sharell शारेल March 28, 2012 at 10:23 am

A: Kangaroos don’t dance (but the big red ones can box and will punch you) and they not found in the streets — so no, sorry! Too bad, it would be fun if they did.

I became nocturnal for a few months during the Kolkata summer when I was living there. We didn’t have air conditioning, and it was too hot and humid to even be awake during the day!

soum March 28, 2012 at 6:03 pm

Sharell ,
Considering you are into herbal stuff
what do use as mosquito repellent , I think chemical in toothpaste does much less harm than chemicals in mosquito-repellents. Need some advice here.

Reply

Sharell शारेल April 4, 2012 at 11:30 am

Ugh, mosquitoes! They are really hard to keep away, and I have to sleep under a net. I also use this natural repellent: http://www.goodknightnaturals.com/

I do agree, putting chemicals on your skin is much worth than toothpaste.
