My nephew isn’t a little baby anymore! In a couple of weeks, he’ll be 10 months old. He’s already so strong and active, and can’t wait to get moving properly….

Post image for Sunday Sundown Sessions at Aurus Mumbai

The two things I love most about Sundays in Mumbai are brunches and sunset parties — both on the beach. It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of the Sunday brunch at Vie Deck and Lounge at Juhu. A little further along Juhu beach, Aurus hosts a weekly Sunday Sundown Session from 5 p.m. I had a blissful time there last Sunday….

Post image for The Gift of Tea

I was thrilled to receive a gift in the mail today. It was a thank you gift from some special expat friends in Chennai. It was just the kind of gift I love. A big gift made up of lots of smaller gifts. Even better, it smelled divine! Part of the gift was the ingredients to brew up some very tasty chai….

Another question I often get asked is how have my parents reacted to my intercultural relationship. The short answer is good and bad. My mum surprised me by being very supportive. My dad, however, is less than pleased…

Post image for Celebrating Dussehra with the Family

Happy Dussehra everyone! Today is Dussehra in India. This special occasion, which takes place the day after the nine nights of Navaratri, marks the defeat of the demon king Ravana by Lord Rama. It also celebrates warrior Goddess Durga’s victory over the evil buffalo demon Mahishasura. Dussehra is an important family occasion — a sari wearing occasion even! — so my husband and I spent the day with the family…

Post image for A Random Saturday Night in Mumbai Driving a Rickshaw

Last night, much to my delight, I finally got the chance to drive an auto rickshaw again. I’d been longing to do so ever since the Rickshaw Challenge ended….

Post image for Ganesh Visarjan and the Maha Street Party

The Ganpatti statue in my sister-in-law’s street was taken for visarjan (immersion) last night. These immersions happen on various days over the course of the Ganesh Chaturthi festival. Popular days include the third, fifth, seventh, tenth, and of course the last (and most exuberant) day. There are no hard and fast rules as [...]

Post image for Ganesh Chaturthi and the Maha Prasad

My sister-in-law, who lives a short walk away from us, has a large Ganpatti at the end of her street every year. Every year they hold a maha aarti (great ritual/prayer) in front of the statue, and distribute prasad (food that has been offered in worship to the God) to everyone. The prasad isn’t any ordinary prasad though. It’s maha prasad (great prasad)….

I relished the opportunity to have a relatively “normal” lunch out today. That is, a lunch like I used to have with my friends back home — Western food, drinks, and interesting conversation. I go to these lunches every month or so in Mumbai, with some of the other crazy foreign women who are married to Indian guys and living in the city….
