Getting Married

Yesterday I wrote about my American friend who wanted to date an Indian girl. As part of trying to understand why it was so difficult to date an Indian, he asked me about my relationship. I’ve not only dated an Indian, I’ve also married an Indian. My friend wanted to know what was so different about my situation, and why it has been possible for me….

Our Mumbai Registry Marriage

by Sharell on June 11, 2008

in Getting Married

At last, all the legal formalities of our marriage are complete! We solemnized our intention to be married at the Mumbai Registrar of Marriage on a rainy monsoon day in June. Our three witnesses were my husband’s brother, and two of his oldest friends. It was another lengthy process involving more forms, photocopies, and waiting…

One of the most confusing parts about marrying an Indian, as a foreigner in India, is actually figuring out how to go about it. All marriages involving a foreigner in India fall under the Special Marriages Act 1954. This means that you’ll have to apply to the marriage registration office in your local area to get married….

Our Indian Wedding Reception

by Sharell on April 26, 2008

in Getting Married

Following on from our Indian wedding ceremony, our wedding reception was held at the same venue. A complete change of clothes is necessary for both the bride and groom, and their close family, after the wedding ceremony. For me, it was a chance to put on the traditional red sari that I was so looking forward to wearing. In India, red is the colour of marriage….

Our Indian Wedding Ceremony

by Sharell on April 26, 2008

in Getting Married

Our wedding day dawned peacefully. It soon resumed the chaotic pattern of the previous few days though, and remained that way until the end. The wedding ceremony started with my husband being greeted at the venue with a garland and aarti (traditional Hindu ritual with a lamp placed on a platter). My mum performed it to welcome her son-in-law, and put a red tilak on his forehead….

My Mehendi Party

by Sharell on April 24, 2008

in Family & Friends, Getting Married

Once it got underway (the Indians arrived the usual one hour late, and the biryani that we ordered two hours late!), my mehendi party was lots of fun. The mehendi party is where all the women of the family, from both the bride and groom’s side, get together to have henna applied to their hands….

The ladies (my family and friends from Australia) don’t want to take any chances with their health so they’re only drinking mineral water, as opposed to packaged drinking water. This resulted in an elaborate mission to find and buy as much mineral water as possible. Their initial search lead them to somehow get lost in a slum near Carter Road in Bandra…

My mum, her cousin, and two family friends landed in Mumbai this morning. They’ve come to attend the wedding. My best friend from secondary school is arriving tonight, and one of my cousins on Friday. I can’t believe how brave and adventurous they are…
