Post image for Adapting to and Retaining Indian Customs

One Indian reader recently posted an interesting comment about her love marriage into a conservative family from a village in Bihar. She said she had to adjust to their customs, such as covering her face with a ghoonghat in front of men so that her eyes wouldn’t be seen. It was difficult and frustrating [...]

Now I Have Head Lice

by Sharell on October 22, 2009

in Daily Life in India

Sigh. India seems determined to test my will to be here at the moment. It’s given me another gift — for the second time, head lice. Actually, my husband was generous enough to give it to me. He’s probably returning the favour after I gave it to him in Kolkata….

I’ve resigned myself to the fact that the water supply to our apartment complex is one of those things in India that there is no logic to. If there is a system to it, I’ve given up trying to figure it out….

I just arrived home after another day at the Foreigner’s Regional Registration Office (FRRO). It was one of those roller coaster days that India is famous for, where things constantly went in and out of my favour. However, the overall outcome was positive. I succeeded in getting myself re-registered. In fact, I initially thought that the process was going to go so smoothly this time, I would have nothing to write (complain) about…

Last night, my husband, friend and I caught up with another friend who was visiting from Kolkata. We went to his hotel to collect him from his room. To my surprise, we were stopped by the staff at the front desk….

And on to the topic that bothers me the most in India — men relieving themselves in public everywhere. Apparently, France used to suffer from the same problem. Men chose to piddle all over the streets of Paris, and nothing could stop them. A solution was found though…

Another Round of Frustration at the FRRO

by Sharell on September 10, 2009

in Adjusting to India

It’s almost been six months since I last left and returned to India, thus necessitating a trip to the place that every foreigner loves to hate — the Foreigner’s Regional Registration Office (FRRO). Even Persons of Indian Origin aren’t immune to having to register themselves there if they stay in India for more than six months at a time….

Cinematographer Adeep Tandon is a “man of principles” who “will not succumb to any pressure”. He certainly proved it a couple of nights ago, when he was detained at the octeroi tax plaza in Vashi after refusing to pay a 100 rupee ($2) bribe….
