Following on from our Indian wedding ceremony, our wedding reception was held at the same venue. A complete change of clothes is necessary for both the bride and groom, and their close family, after the wedding ceremony. For me, it was a chance to put on the traditional red sari that I was so looking forward to wearing. In India, red is the colour of marriage….

Our wedding day dawned peacefully. It soon resumed the chaotic pattern of the previous few days though, and remained that way until the end. The wedding ceremony started with my husband being greeted at the venue with a garland and aarti (traditional Hindu ritual with a lamp placed on a platter). My mum performed it to welcome her son-in-law, and put a red tilak on his forehead….

Once it got underway (the Indians arrived the usual one hour late, and the biryani that we ordered two hours late!), my mehendi party was lots of fun. The mehendi party is where all the women of the family, from both the bride and groom’s side, get together to have henna applied to their hands….
